Position: Application Developer- Power BI

Location : Remote (Candidate Must Be Local)

Power BI Developer Needed

Description: OIT is seeking a skilled Power BI Developer to assist with our BI Program. Ideally will have

expertise in the following technical areas aspects:

  • Requirements Gathering

Collaborates with the business and with data analysts to understand requirements and business objectives for relevant reports & visualizations as well as underlying data model.

Capable of identifying relevant data sources and attributes for use in model

Proficient in using Excel at an intermediate level, comfortable with complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis. Ability to reverse engineer processes originally developed by business users, deconstructing existing formulas, pivot tables, and data analyses to interpret business requirements based on existing manual processes and suggest efficiency improvements and logic optimizations.

  • Data Modeling:

Designing and documenting efficient conceptual, logical, and physical data models to support business requirements.

Understands how to deliver row and column-level security within the Power BI semantic model.

Needs to be able to establish re-usable semantic data models within Power BI.

Familiarity with running tabular Editor Best Practice Analyzer for adhering to modeling and DAX best practices.

Creating relationships between tables and optimizing data structures.

  • Data Source Connectivity Setup:

Connecting to various data sources (APIs, Big Query, ArcGIS map and feature layers, SQL databases, Excel files, etc.) including streaming datasets.

Ensuring seamless data extraction and transformation.

Collaborating with the members of OIT Integrations team to ascertain available integration patterns.

  • DAX Formulas:

Proficiency in writing DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) formulas.

Calculated columns, measures, and custom calculations.

  • Report Creation:

Designing and developing interactive and visually appealing reports and dashboards.

Incorporating slicers, visuals, and drill-through functionality, including streaming and ArcGIS visuals.

Capable of optimizing Power BI reports or making suggestions to underlying data model for performance, including the use of DAX Studio and built in Power BI performance tools.

  • Power BI Service & Deployment:

Proficient in publishing reports to the Power BI Service, managing access controls, automating refresh schedules, and optimizing report performance for large datasets.

  • AI Familiarity:

Comfortable working with AI tools and leveraging AI technologies to enhance processes and optimize data analysis workflows. Experience with Google AI tools is a plus.

It is expected that the developer will follow organizational patterns for source and version control for Power BI files and be able to utilize Azure DevOps as appropriate within that process.

  • Collaboration & Communication Skills:

Experienced in collaborating with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, explain technical concepts to non-technical users, and deliver reports that align with business goals.

Ability to present complex data insights and reports to non-technical audiences and stakeholders, ensuring clarity and effective communication.

Experienced in meeting preparation, screensharing and conducting working sessions which may include discussing backlog item statuses, and gathering additional requirements as they may change.

This engagement is expected to exceed 12 months in duration.

While OIT supports telecommuting / remote work, it is expected that the contractor performs the work within the State of Colorado and preferably in the Denver Metropolitan Area; there will be occasions where the contractor will have to collaborate with their colleagues and attend in-person meetings in one of the State offices.
